Description

Classic 1950's Kay 5-String Banjo with Hard Case
Here we have a beautiful 1950's Kay 5-String Banjo, in really remarkable condition. After searching many old Kay catalogs from the era, I can't be more specific on the date, but this instrument was built during the 1950's and in Chicago.
I have cleaned this instrument completely, installed a new REMO Fiberskyn head, and D'Addario strings. The neck is straight, and the action is nice. The sound, as to be expected, is classic. It is bright and loud. I admit I am not a seasoned banjo player, so I'm sure you may want to work on the set-up, but it is presently quite playable.
The tuning keys all work well, although a few are slightly bent. The 5th string key turns well, and is direct drive, not geared. Includes hard shell case (somewhat flimsy by today's standards) and a closed-back plate that it came with, and mounting screws. I do not know if the case or back plate are original.
Please examine the pictures, as they are a good representation of the instrument's condition. Note the patriotic red, white and blue that someone painted the screw heads inside the ring.
